Most banking apps today struggle to meet user expectations. Common issues include slow performance, outdated designs, confusing navigation, and limited support features.
Vault is a new mobile banking app created to simplify the way people manage their money.
Through conducting user interviews and a competitor analysis, I found that users struggled with outdated and cluttered interfaces, lack of integrated saving tools and found it difficult to contact customer service.
Design principles:
Following my user research, I created a set of principles to guide the design of Vault.
-
Vault prioritises information hierarchy, clean layouts, and straightforward language. Every screen is designed to reduce mental load and make it easy for users to understand their financial position at a glance.
-
Users should be able to find what they need without thinking twice. Vault uses consistent patterns and layouts to help users move through tasks smoothly.
-
Vault gives users control over how they view and manage their finances by incorporating customisable account images and savings targets for users with specific financial goals.
The process:
Once the digital wireframes were completed, I created a low-fidelity prototype. The primary user flow I connected was checking transactions for an Everyday account and checking a Savings account goal so I could use the prototype in a usability study.
Usability study findings:
Users responded positively to the clean and simple UI. It reduced mental load as they didn’t feel lost within each new screen, and could navigate to check transactions within 1-2 taps. These results highlighted where I could refine the wireframes further into a high-fidelity prototype, and how I can increase visual hierachy to help customers scan each screen quickly when using for example in the transactions screen.
